There’s been so much happening in the mobile and web app area in the past 12 months - things are happening so quickly that we’ve found that they’re passing right by people and leaving them behind.

So we thought we’d share some of our learnings - share some really interesting facts and stats plus examples of what people and businesses are already doing with mobility.

During the month of June, we’ll be running a series of sessions with businesses about what’s happening in the mobile and web app space. (It’s also a chance for us to get out and stretch our legs a little.)

We needed a partner that that we could rely on to get the job done. Dynamic Clarity struck the right balance – they advised us of the best approach but also listened and acted on our feedback. This balance generated an excellent result for us. Alfred and Steve are extremely client focussed and were very responsive to our needs. The project we engaged them for was successful due to their expertise, flexibility and dedication.

I must admit that we do focus a lot on Apple and iOS. It’s difficult not to when 9 of out the 10 times someone asks you to build an app, it’s either an iPhone or iPad app. However we have noticed over the past few months that there’s been more inquiries about Android or at least apps that work on both iOS and Android, rather than just Android only.

But here’s a new player to into the mix, RIM’s Blackberry PlayBook (that’s with a capital B and no space). Those Blackberry guys have been busy toiling away with bringing out their first tablet computer. Actually it’s Blackberry’s first hardware product that’s not a smartphone in it’s 17 year history.

The magical device has arrived once again.

The queue for the iPad 2 the night before March 25 2011

So the iPad 2 was launched on Friday last week. I know, we have to get some for development purposes and showing the shiny stuff to clients but the queues have put me off a little.

We did do some scouting on Friday during our lunch hour around the Apple Store in Sydney CBD to see if we would see anyone we knew in the line. It didn’t take very long to find someone, Sean McNamara from MacAssist - i actually first met Sean at the local park near my old place in Wollstonecraft where i’d go to run my dogs. Sean’s an old hand with Macs - he’s by far the most hardcore Apple follower i know (i think he might still call them a Macintosh) and even has a tattoo on his chest of the Apple logo. The multi-colour one, you know it.

Books we like

Here at Dynamic Clarity, we like to read. I still prefer the old fashioned ones with paper and covers whilst Steve is an ebook kinda guy (Kindle and iBook).

REWORK by Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson of 37Signals

WHY? A series of quick and commonsense advice that can help you and your business straight away.

Business Model Generation: A Handbook for Visionaries, Game Changers, and Challengers by Alexander Osterwalder (now who has my copy of this book? i can’t seem to find it - it’s somewhere i know)

WHY? A beautifully illustrated book that’s breaks down business models for how they work today. How does your business work? Or more importantly, how COULD your business work better?

The Presentation Secrets of Steve Jobs by Carmine Gallo

WHY? Let’s face it, everyone wants to present like Steve. Make presenting your new line of zebra-print shag pile carpets to your customers exciting!

Entrepreneur’s Guide to Customer Development by Brant Cooper & Patrick Vlaskovits

WHY? Customer Development is a principle that is at the core of the Lean Startup philosophy, a philosophy we here at Dynamic Clarity swear by.

These are just a few - there are more but these ones just came to mind. Oh, and try out Booko.com.au if you haven’t already - it’s is a pretty cool site to find the cheapest online retailer to buy your books from if you’re in Australia.

apps4nsw hackathon and PETrified

PETrified

Last Saturday, Steve and i attended apps4nsw, an annual event run for the DSTA, the NSW Department of Services, Technology and Administration, at the Powerhouse Museum. Run by Maxine and John from Web Directions, there were over 150 odd developer/designer types that came along as well as some folk from Google (demoing their Fusion Tables product) and Yahoo (demoing their YQL platform). From 8am to 8pm, it was a hack-off to see what apps we could build using NSW government data with cash prizes and robots going to the winners of 5 categories: Energy, Environment, General, Spatial and Transport.

We teamed up with some free agents on the day;  James Martin from Campaign Monitor (we <3 CM), Ralph Lengler PhD candidate at USyd, Valery Yuschenko JQuery FOB from the Ukraine and William Parry programmer extraordinaire from Leo Burnett.
